SWEDEN HAS SET THE TARGET OF BECOMING THE WORLD'S FIRST FOSSIL-FREE WELFARE NATION BY 2045

Sweden has set the target of becoming the world's first fossil-free welfare nation by 2045. This climate policy framework decided in 2017, is the most important climate reform in Sweden’s history and sets out Sweden’s implementation of the Paris Agreement while providing long-term conditions for business and society in the transition.

Since 1990, Sweden's emissions of greenhouse gases have fallen by around 29 %, while GDP has grown by 86 %. The Swedish experience shows that the green transformation is not only positive for the environment, but that it also can be a great opportunity to drive innovation and industrial and economic development.

SWEDEN IS CONTINUOUSLY RANKED AS LEADING THE TRANSITION TOWARDS A MORE SUSTAINABLE FUTURE

#1 Global Sustainable Competitiveness Index 2021
#2 Sustainable Development Report 2021
#2 Global Innovation Index 2021

Sweden is continuously ranked as leading the way towards a more sustainable future, as well as being ranked as one of the top countries for innovation and new solutions. As outlined in the UN Agenda 2030, it is crucial that all sectors of society join efforts to adress the shared challenges and reach the sustainable development goals. Governments, international organizations, the business sector and other non-state actors must work together to contribute to changing the current consumption and production patterns into more sustainable ones.

Sweden is well-known as a forefront runner when it comes to sustainability, and many Swedish companies have defined clear global targets for carbon neutrality. To realize these targets, Swedish companies are innovating and taking new types of solutions and business models focused on for example carbon reduction to the market.

However, for Swedish companies to be able to realize their targets not only do internal processes, business models and solutions need to evolve, but also the surrounding infrastructure and the entire value chain. One of the major challenges faced by Swedish companies in their global carbon neutrality ambitions is their footprint in China, that in many cases is an important piece of their global operations. Like Sweden, China has set out targets regarding carbon neutrality: China will aim to hit peak CO2-emissions by 2030 and reach carbon neutrality by 2060.

PIONEER THE POSSIBLE - SWEDISH COMPANIES IN CHINA DRIVING THE GREEN TRANSITION

With the shared goal of accelerating the green transition, Team Sweden in China has together with Swedish companies launched the platform Pioneer the possible: A platform supporting Swedish companies to reach their carbon neutrality goals and promoting Swedish sustainable solutions to the Chinese market. The platform evolves around four main themes, high lighted by Swedish companies as the key challenges in China for reaching their carbon neutrality goals.

Supply chain & cicularity
Green production
Green mobility
Sustainable urban development

The platform is a forum for addressing these challenges together, searching for solutions and working with local stakeholders to contribute to the green transition.

The Pioneer the possible platform is managed by Business Sweden in China, in close collaboration with the platform member companies and Team Sweden.

PIONEER THE POSSIBLE - THE CONCEPT

Pioneer the possible is a global concept created by the Swedish Institute in collaboration with Business Sweden, the Ministry for Foreign Affairs and many more. The aim of the concept is to position Sweden as a natural leader in the global business community when it comes to green transition for sustainable development. By encouraging and create opportunities for cooperation, and to show Swedish examples and innovations, the initiative will contribute to an increased growth and a sustainable development.

In China, Team Sweden has turned the concept into a platform to support Swedish companies to reach their carbon neutrality goals and promoting Swedish sustainable solutions to the Chinese market.
